You change your wardrobe for the chilly winter months, and you’ve probably loaded up on warm, tough winter boots, toasty accessories, and trendy coats and jackets. However, your grooming routine needs a bit of attention during the wintertime, too. Your hands, face, and beard all need a bit more attention in the colder months, and there are plenty of great products to help you out. To ensure you’re equipped to fight back against the chilly weather, we’ve put together a few essential winter grooming tips specifically for men.
Tip #1 – Don’t Skip the Hydration for Skin
During the winter months, it’s tougher to keep skin hydrated, so make sure you’re faithfully moisturizing your face and your body. Are you going for the clean-shaven look? Step outside, and you’ll quickly realize that “baby, it’s cold outside,” which means you really need to protect that exposed skin. Fail to moisturize after shaving and your face is going to redden quickly in the cold. Use a good post-shave balm to reduce irritation and redness while providing skin with moisture.
Post-shave care isn’t enough to keep skin hydrated. You’ll also need a quality men’s moisturizing cream to keep skin soft and healthy. If you have oily skin, go with a lightweight moisturizer, but if you have drier skin, choose a heavier cream that locks in moisture. Apply the cream you choose morning and night after cleansing.
Don’t forget about the rest of your body. All of your skin can use a bit more moisture during the winter. Consider switching to a rehydrating body wash during the cold months and spend an extra minute in the bathroom applying moisturizer to your body.
Tip #2 – Keep Those Lips Protected
Whether you’re heading to a winter party or out on a date with someone special, the last thing you want is chapped lips. Cold, windy days can wreak havoc on the lips, so they need a bit more attention during the chilly winter months. It’s easy to find lip balm specifically designed for men, so find one you like and use it regularly to make sure your lips don’t resemble cracked leather when you’re ready to move in for a peck on the cheek or the lips.
Tip #3 – If You Have a Beard, Condition It
Beards happen to be on-trend right now, and many men (including celebrities like Zac Efron, David Beckham, and Kanye West) love wearing them to keep their face warmer when it’s cold outdoors. If you have a beard, it’s important to make sure you condition it regularly with a quality beard oil to keep it protected from the cold. Beard oils help replenish the oils that often get stripped away from your facial hair when it’s exposed to harsh weather.
All you need to do is put a few drops of the oil in your hands and then ruffle into your board, combing it through with a good beard brush. Don’t forget to shampoo and condition your beard regularly with products specifically designed for facial hair.
Tip #4 – Don’t Forget Sunscreen…Even in the Winter
Even though it’s the middle of the winter, Esquire notes that it’s essential to apply sunscreen. Despite the cold, cloudy days that often come with winter, UV rays still escape through the fog, clouds, and snow, and they can damage your skin.
Apply a bit of SPF 15 to exposed skin each day to keep it protected from UV rays. You can make your facial moisturizer do double duty by choosing one that includes SPF 15.
Tip #5 – Take Care of Your Hands
Even if you’re wearing your stylish gloves (Real Men Real Style offers some helpful tips for choosing gloves) this winter, your hands still take a real beating when it’s chilly out. Choose a thick moisturizer for hands and use it regularly to keep hands from getting dry and chapped from the cold.
