On February 19, 2019, legendary fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, passed away in Paris at the age of 85. Not only was he the head and creative director of luxury brand Chanel, but he was also the creative director of Fendi, the Italian leather goods and fur brand. He wasn’t just a massive force in the fashion industry, but he was a beloved, close friend to fellow designers, models, and celebrities across the globe. Donatella Versace, Diane Kruger, and Victoria Beckham were just a few of the big names who took to Instagram to express their thoughts on the loss of the designer.
As the fashion world continues to mourn the huge loss of Karl Lagerfeld, his work continues to live on. To celebrate his contribution to fashion, we’ve put together a few of his top Chanel looks through the years.
The Iconic Chanel Tweed Jacket
There’s nothing that’s quite as ‘Chanel” as the tweed jacket. The jacket was actually created by Coco Chanel and inspired by menswear. While Coco began working with tweed as early as 1924, according to The Richest, it wasn’t until 1954 that she first designed the iconic tweed jacket.
In the late 1980s, Lagerfeld would begin playing around with the jacket himself, pairing it with flirty lace and tartan for a unique, edgy look, and he’s gone back to the iconic look again and again through the years.
The Metallic Brocade Pant Suit
One of Lagerfeld’s favorite models, Cara Delevigne showed up at the 2017 Costume Institute Gala in one of his wilder creations – a metallic, brocade pantsuit from the Chanel Spring 2018 couture collection. The pantsuit brought futuristic elegance to the event, and she paired it with metallic heels and a wide metallic belt, along with a silver painted buzz-cut that added edge to her outfit.
The Sculptural Mini Dress
Diane Kruger was a longtime muse of Lagerfeld, and she showed off one of his stunning looks at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS event back in 2012, which took place during the Cannes Film Festival. The beautiful mini dress featured a unique sculptural mini skirt and beautiful purple floral accents and was from the Chanel Resort 2013 collection. A structured metallic clutch added a modern touch to her look.
Embellished Swimwear in the ‘90s
Lagerfeld really seemed to begin making his mark with Chanel in the 1990s, and one of his iconic looks of the decade was the embellished swimwear he created. Worn by models Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell at Chanel’s 1995 Spring/Summer show, the two-piece suits featured metallic appliques and broach-style additions for an over-the-top look.
Lady Gaga’s White Ballgown in 2011
Lady Gaga’s always known for wearing standout, unique looks for every event she attends, and at the opening of Gaga’s Workshop in 2011 at Barneys New York, she wore one of the most stunning creations by Karl. The full-skirted white ballgown, which included a petticoat, as inspired by some of Chanel’s classic suits looked stunning on the petite musician. And of course, she completed her look with a matching Chanel bag.
The Chanel Logo Belt in Spring 2019
The Chanel Spring 2019 show had a created beach scene as a backdrop, and it featured many of what would be Lagerfeld’s last creations. One of the hottest trends to come out of the spring show was the Chanel Logo Belt, which was worn on several of Karl’s new suit designs, along with the dual Chanel handbag look.
