While we typically associate skirts with the warmer weather of spring and summer, you can also rock them during the fall and winter by choosing options in thicker fabrics and pairing them with tights. We have a huge selection of skirts for every occasion, so whether you're looking for a head-turning trend piece or flattering, streamlined basics, you'll find it all here.

History

Skirts have been a wardrobe essential for thousands of years, and both men and women wore them in prehistoric times. They have been worn in virtually every established society in some form, but the fabrics and designs depended mostly on what was practical given the weather and other societal factors. Typically these skirts were long, although there are some early societies, like the Chinese, that did wear miniskirts. In the 18th and 19th century, skirts were typically worn with petticoats and were very wide and dramatic. Hems slowly started to get higher over the years to allow for more movement, although designs remained modest.

In the beginning of the 20th century, hemlines started to shorten, with hemlines well above the knee becoming popular in the 1920s. Skirt trends have varied widely in the decades since, but hems of varying lengths have been acceptable and fashionable, giving women even more room to experiment with their style. Some of the most notable skirt trends included the voluminous skirts of the 1950s that came just past the knee, and the small miniskirts of the 1960s that came up very high on the thighs. Many designers recently have also been showing skirts for men in their high fashion presentations over the past decade or so, with Jean Paul Gautier being the most notable.

Lengths

Mini

The miniskirt is a very ubiquitous item that's always bound to turn heads. Miniskirts have hems that sit above the knee, with the most risque options hitting at the very top of the thigh. Miniskirts are often considered to be a very flirty, youthful piece and are typically worn for social events or casually, rather than at work. The short cut of a miniskirt accentuates the length of your legs, and wearing a miniskirt is a great way to make your legs look longer, particularly when styled with a pair of heels.

One of the most popular types of miniskirt is a denim miniskirt, which is a summer essential. You can easily keep it casual with a pair of sneakers and a t-shirt, or dress it up for brunch with wedges and a blousy top.

Midi

Midi skirts have become very popular over the last several years as a versatile trend piece that can be worn many different ways. These are classified as skirts that hit below the knees but well above the floor. There are so many different types of midi skirts to choose from depending on your style.

If you enjoy feminine pieces, try a flowy pleated midi skirt, which adds a touch of elegance and some dramatic movement to any outfit. If you want to accentuate your curves, look for a body hugging midi skirt in a pencil cut. This is a very versatile piece that can go from work to a night out, and manages to be both modest and very alluring at the same time.

Maxi

The classic maxi skirt is another ultra-feminine essential that can easily be dressed up or down. While they can look very formal, maxi skirts are actually very comfortable, and they are a great option for a hot summer day when you don't want to show off your legs. They can also be worn in the fall and winter with sweaters and boots. Since maxi skirts are generally very flowy, they look best when paired with a form-fitting top to keep your overall look very streamlined.

Style

Pencil

Pencil skirts are a classic workwear piece for women, but they can be worn outside the boardroom too. They are very flattering, with a high waist and tight fit that elongates the legs. Pairing them with a tucked-in floaty blouse makes for an easy work outfit, but you can transition these skirts to an evening at the bar with a t-shirt and leather jacketIf you want to wear a pencil skirt off-duty, look for light knit fabrics with a bit of stretch that will allow you to move around comfortably.

Pleated

Pleated skirts are a fun, trendy item that adds some movement to an otherwise simple outfit. A long and flowy pleated skirt in a light color looks incredible for the spring and goes perfectly with sandals. Shorter pleated skirts have more of an edgy schoolgirl vibe and are a fun look for a casual night out. Short pleated skirts are very flirty on their own, so you don't need much to make them part of a showstopping outfit - just slip on a turtleneck and some boots and you have the perfect transitional outfit between seasons.

A-Line

A-line skirts are slim at the top and flare out towards the bottom. A-line skirts can be any length, but this silhouette is most often associated with voluminous retro silhouettes. A-line skirts are great for every body type, because they accentuate your waist and give you the illusion of an hourglass figure. Because the cut is so flattering, A-line skirts are the perfect way to experiment with color and print. A bright A-line skirt is a charming spring essential that can be worn in virtually any situation.

Wrap

The wrap skirt is another flattering silhouette that will show off your waist and give you an hourglass figure. Wrap skirts typically have one or two panels of fabric attached to a tie at the top, which you can arrange in a way that is most flattering for your body. They look very sophisticated and elegant, and they will give you a very commanding presence. Wrap skirts are typically flowy and hit at or just below the knee, but are available in many different cuts.

Fitted

Fitted skirts are extremely flattering, and have a tight cut that shows off your shape. They don't have much movement, so they are great skirts to wear with flowy tops or even an oversized sweater. Fitted skirts differ from pencil skirts in that they can be any length, and they don't necessarily always have a high waisted cut. Since the cut of a fitted skirt is simple, it's a great opportunity to experiment with unique fabrics and patterns.

Full

A full skirt harkens back to the skirts of the 19th and early 20th century, which were very round and voluminous, and often worn with petticoats. While you wouldn't wear a petticoat anymore, you can still achieve this dramatic look with a full skirt. Full skirts are very romantic and elegant, and they make a very bold statement. Full skirts look particularly great for an elegant night out, like a formal or a trip to the theater.

Skater

Skater skirts are essentially a combination of a mini skirt and an a-line skirt. You get the flirtiness of a mini skirt with the classiness of an a-line, and they have a very youthful vibe that's not childish. While you will most often find skater skirts in a mini cut, you might also find options that go all the way to the knee. Since skater skirts are so cute and feminine, they are the perfect choice for a date night.

Cut

Button Up

Button front skirts are a classic look that evokes 1970s vibes. They are simultaneously very classy and casual, and pair particularly well with girly pieces like a floral top. Button up skirts are also very comfortable and easy to take on and off. They are typically available in midi or mini lengths, and often have a slight a-line cut.

High Low

High low skirts came into fashion as a trend piece a few years ago, but several seasons later, it looks like they are here to stay. These skirts have a longer hemline in the back that goes higher in the front, and they usually are very flowy, with a train that catches the wind behind you when you move. The asymmetric cut of a high low skirt immediately adds some interest to even the most basic outfit. These skirts are sophisticated and fashion forward, and they are appropriate for formal or professional situations while still being fun and stylish.

Front Slit

A front slit on any skirt automatically makes it feel just a little bit sexier and more daring. A skirt with a front slit will make your legs look longer and more alluring, and they also give you more room to move as you go about your day. Slits on a midi or mini skirt are an ultra-bold look, while a slit on a long maxi skirt shows just a flash of skin for a little bit of intrigue.

Color

Black

A black skirt is a classic that every woman should have in her wardrobe. Black skirts are a work essential, but they can also be styled with bolder pieces for a night out on the town. Their dark color means they can transition from season to season with ease.

Light Blue

Light blue skirts are perfect for the warmer months when bright, pastel colors start to come into style. Denim is one of the most popular fabrics for a light blue skirt, and denim skirts are must-haves for casual summer days. You can also opt for a flowy light blue skirt for a more demure, feminine look.

Dark Blue

Dark blue skirts are another essential neutral piece, but they are much softer than black. They can be paired with red, yellow, or white for a preppy or nautical look, or you can pair them with pastels for a nice contrast that's not overwhelming.

Skirts - A Versatile and Effortless Essential

Beige

Beige skirts make the perfect neutral complement to lighter colored skirts, and they are an excellent piece to add to your work wardrobe, particularly during the summer. Beige can come in many different undertones, so when styling your beige skirts, make sure to pair them with complementary pieces. For example, some beiges have yellow undertones, some have pink, and some have more neutral brown undertones.

White

A light, flowy white skirt is perfect for a hot summer day. White pairs very well with florals or pastels, but it can also make a good neutral backdrop for deeper tones like red, green, or purple. Since white is less forgiving than other colors, be sure to choose a silhouette that you feel comfortable in.

Light Grey

Light grey is potentially the most versatile of all the neutral color options out there. It goes well with light and dark colors, and can be dressed up or down for the occasion. A light grey knit skirt is a comfy option for days off, while a more formal pencil skirt is a versatile investment for work days. In particular, light grey and pastel pink work very well together for a sweet, feminine outfit.

Brown

Brown skirts are an essential if you like to wear a lot of deeper earth tones, like green, maroon, and purple. Brown is much softer than black, so the overall look of a brown skirt is much more relaxed. They also are a great piece to have for the winter months. If you live in a colder climate, add some tights underneath to stay warm while still showing some leg.

Rise

High Rise

High rise skirts hit right at the waist, accentuating the thinnest part of your body. They are very flattering and make you look very put together. If you are on the petite side, you can use high rise skirts to make your legs look longer and give you the illusion of height. High rise skirts also look great with crop tops, because you can show a hint of skin without looking too scandalous.

Mid Rise

Mid rise skirts hit somewhere between the hips and the waistline. These skirts typically have a more relaxed cut than a high rise skirt. Mid rise skirts are also a good option if you don't want to tuck your top in, but instead let the look be more flowy.

Pattern

Solid

Solid colored skirts are always a safe bet when putting together an outfit, and every woman should have at least a few in her wardrobe. You will of course want to have some neutral colored options, but solid skirts in brighter colors can also make a very flattering statement piece. Wearing a solid colored skirt also makes it easier to play with pattern in other parts of your outfit.

Floral

Floral skirts are a classic piece for springtime, but they can transition through to the other seasons, depending on how they are styled. An airy or ruffled floral skirt makes for a very breezy and feminine outfit. To wear florals in a more sophisticated way, look for flowers with deeper tones and unique silhouettes, like a full skirt or an asymmetrical skirt.

Print

Stand out from the crowd with unique prints that no one else is wearing. Many designers today are stepping up their game with interesting graphics and shapes on their skirts. A printed skirt in any cut is an incredible statement piece that shows off your individual style.

Metallic

Metallic skirts are very popular for evening wear, and are a great way to turn heads at a club or gala. There are a few different ways to wear metallics - you can rock a skirt with a subtle sheen, or go for something bolder with sequins. Metallics generally look best when paired with dark, edgier pieces.

Leopard Print

Leopard print skirts are a classic that always seem to go in and out of style. In fact, leopard print is such a fashion essential that many people like to style it as a neutral. It's bold and sassy, and looks incredible when worn with a sophisticated red lip.

Material

Silk

A silk skirt is a very elegant piece that is perfect for a formal occasion. Silk conveys good taste and sophistication, and it feels very light and smooth to the touch. Many silk skirts feature charming patterns like florals and polka dots.

Tweed

Tweed skirts are a preppy classic that you can rock both in and out of the office. They are often associated with Chanel and other high fashion houses, and look great with a crisp white button down and matching jacket.

Denim

A denim skirt is a casual classic that instantly evokes 1970s vibes. Rock a ripped denim miniskirt for a California cool vibe, or opt for a longer button up denim skirt for an outfit that is more timeless.

Cotton

Cotton skirts are the most lightweight of the options mentioned here, and they are often the most comfortable as well. Cotton skirts allow you to move around more freely than other types of skirts do, and they are great for hot weather wear.

Leather

A leather skirt is a fun and edgy option for a night out. Leather skirts are also excellent for the fall and winter, because they are thick and will keep you warm. The sleek look of leather is very flattering and sexy.

Details

Sequin

Sequin details on your skirt are the best way to turn heads at a big event. While sequins are often associated with New Year's Eve, you can rock them all year long. The way that they catch the light will immediately put everyone's eyes on you.

Asymmetric

An asymmetric skirt always looks very fashion forward. There are so many different ways designers create asymmetric skirts - some just have slight differences in hemline on one side, while others use two different materials to create contrast in an innovative way.

Skirts - A Versatile and Effortless Essential

Tiered

Tiered skirts feature cascading layers of ruffles that will have you feeling like the flamenco dancer emoji as you move throughout the day. A tiered skirt looks very energetic and fun, and the layers have a natural bounce to them that is quite flattering.

Belted

Many skirts, particularly wrap skirts, come with a belt already attached. Belted skirts give your waist some extra definition, and they look very polished and sophisticated. Be sure to tuck your top in while wearing a belted skirt so you can show off your waist.

Brands

Trends

Bold colored skirts have been very trendy this season, with style influencers opting to rock neons like lime green, bright pink, and yellow, as well as other head-turning colors like red and purple. We've also seen a major trend towards intricate detailing on skirts this year, with lots of ruffles and pleats, often in an asymmetrical design. Finally, on the more casual side, embroidered denim skirts have become very popular this year and are a great way to add sophistication to an otherwise laid-back look.

Celebs

Celebrities this season are proving that skirts don't have to be demure and dressed up - they can be effortless. Kate Middleton, one of the most put-together style icons of our generation, recently wore a stunning red checked skirt for an outfit that looks feminine and relaxed at the same time. We've also seen lots of skirts paired with sneakers or puffer coats for an athleisure look.
