History

Scarves have an extremely long history as fashion wear. They go back thousands of years, when they were primarily used to shield the head, face or other parts of the body from the elements. Some ancient armies even used different kinds of scarves to denote ranks among their troops. But while they may have started out for practical reasons, ancient artwork from many cultures across the world reveals that scarves came in a wide variety of colors and elaborate designs.

Fast forward to the late 1700s, and a certain composer named Ludwig van Beethoven sported silk scarves as part of his regular look. The look took on among both men and women, and by the early 1800s these scarves were a symbol of both luxury and good fashion sense. Nevertheless, the general public continued to wear cotton and traditional knit scarves for both warmth and outdoor fashion purposes for decades to come.

In 1937, however, something big happened. The Hermes "Le Carré" (The Square) Scarf debuted on the western fashion scene. This was a luxury scarf made from imported Chinese silk, cut into a large square. It went on to become a big hit, with famous figures like Queen Elizabeth II and Grace Kelly photographed with it. The scarf gained even more fame by making an appearance in 1961's Breakfast At Tiffany's.

The Hermes scarf helped inspire a whole range of other scarf designs, which were incredibly popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s (especially as daytime head wear). By the 1970s, the free-spirited nature of modern society had brought on bold, striking patterns. Scarves were the focal point of many outfits throughout that decade, with wearers opting to tie them around the neck for long, flowy looks.

Scarves retreated a bit in the 1980s and 1990s as other fashion accessories became more pronounced (though knit and cashmere scarves were still highly used with winter wear). Fashion scarves fully made a comeback in the 2000s, largely thanks to Alexander McQueen's skull-covered versions hitting the runways in 2000s. Other designers have since expanded on modern prints and wearability. Scarves of all kinds remain popular today, and they're the perfect way to take an outfit from simple to stunning!

Style

Cape

The cape scarf has been considered fashion forward throughout recent decades, with its long, broad design draping elegantly over the wearer like a cape or poncho. Try wearing it with skinny jeans and tall boots for a timeless, cool-casual appearance. We're particularly in love with fringe versions for an extra draped look.

Wrap

Long and wide, wrap scarves are among the biggest scarf trends right now. This is especially true when it comes to Pashmina wraps, since they can come in just about any color and are as comfortable as they are stylish. Because of their elegant appearance, wrap scarves work great when used with evening wear. Pair one with a sleeveless dress for versatility.

Square

Though they do come in solid colors, square scarves are really all about the print. This is the original designer's scarf, and it can be draped, folded and tied in a variety of ways thanks to its simple shape. Try pairing a bold square scarf with a leather jacket for some sassy throwback style.

Rectangle

The rectangle scarf is a classic design, especially when it comes to winter wear. To keep it looking chic every time you step out into the cold, try playing around with the ways you wrap it around your neck.

Infinity

The infinity scarf is a fairly modern design, having only hit the fashion scene in the 21st Century. A large loop, the infinity scarf is most commonly seen in heavier fabrics and knits as winter attire. For a more fun, dramatic look, loop it over your head only once so it hangs down to your waist. Infinity scarves always look good with any form-fitting coat.

Bandana

This is a traditional scarf design that can be folded and draped in a wide variety of ways. And while bandana scarves may have you thinking Rosie the Riveter, the truth is that today's versions come in a much broader variety of materials and looks. It's always a good idea to have at least a couple of these in your closet to add pops of color to any outfit.

Skinny

Who doesn't love a good skinny scarf? Long and relatively narrow, they come in both thick and thin materials and are also pretty versatile. If you want to be fashion forward though, try adding one to a blazer for a cool professional look.

Blanket

Spread out, a blanket scarf looks like a tapestry or, as its name suggests, a blanket! The cool thing about these scarves is that they can be scrunched in and worn like a traditional scarf or draped in a variety of ways to either complement an outfit or basically be the outfit. Try pairing it with a long necklace and/or a funky bracelet

Material

Silk

For the fashion minded, silk scarves are the way to go when you want to make a statement. Silk scarves come in virtually every color and a huge variety of prints, and they are often best paired with solid color outfits in order to pop. Tie one around your neck for a classic look, or use it as a head wrap for a more glamorous feel. Of course, these days there's really no wrong way to wear a silk scarf.

Cashmere

There are few fabrics that feel better than cashmere. Smooth and soft, a cashmere scarf will keep you warm when you need it to, but it's light enough to be worn as part of a regular outfit. It's pretty impossible to not feel classy in a cashmere.

Wool

A wool scarf is one of the most classic types of scarves of all, and its ability to trap warmth makes it ideal for winter. Thinner wool version can nevertheless be used for fashion purposes only.

Color

Black

While black scarves go well with almost all types of colors, they look particularly striking when used with a white or beige jacket. If you want to add some dramatic flair, go with a black scarf that has some fringe or an eye catching logo

Dark Blue

It can be tempting to pair a dark blue (navy) scarf with neutral tones or even other dark colors. However, you can make your look pop by going in a daringly different direction, pairing it instead with bright colors like orange or hot pink

Red

Few colors pop more on their own than red, and so a red scarf will always shine best when used with white, black or neutral-tone attire. This is also one color that will most likely always be in style.

Dark Green

Green has long been viewed as a lucky color, and a green scarf in particular can make any outfit just a little extra special. Ever seen the 2009 movie Confessions of a Shopaholic? There's a reason Isla Fisher wanted that green scarf before her interview so badly. Even a decade later, the deep purple dress she wore with the scarf would help any modern green scarf pop it all of its lucky glory.

Beige

Beige scarves can look particularly striking against a dark blue or black coat. They can also be a great choice when you want the focus to be on the other clothing items or jewelry you're wearing. Silver and diamonds particularly pop when put against a beige scarf, and gold can create an extra warm and cozy look.

Light Pink

Going for a light pink scarf is a wonderful way to add a pop of color to any outfit, regardless of the season. A light pink scarf can also be used to add softness to a leather jacket or other edgy look.

Pattern

Print

While we like solid colors, we really love the expression that prints offer. Today's scarves are rivaling the 60s and 70s, coming in just about any print you can think of. If you want to go really retro, try pairing your favorite print scarf with a denim jacket

Floral

A floral scarf won't go out of style anytime seen, even though floral on larger clothing items may fade in and out. To add some contrast and edge to this classic pattern, opt for a floral scarf that also has a blunt border of solid color.

Striped

Just like floral, a striped scarf has timeless appeal. Whether it's red, white and blue, peppermint stripes or full on rainbow, there's something about a striped scarf that always feels high fashion. Try pairing one over a black jacket or top to make those stripes really pop.

Logo

Just about every designer out there has their own line of scarves, and we've got them here for you! A logo scarf lets you proudly flaunt your favorite brand in a cool, casual manner.

Plaid

If you're going for a great colder weather look, it doesn't get much more classic than a plaid scarf. Regardless of the exact color shades it comes it, plaid actually pairs well with just about every solid color.

Fringe

A scarf is the one clothing item where fringe will always be acceptable no matter what. Fringe scarves are classic and go with just about any look. We're particularly in love with cape scarves with some fringe, for a comfy, boho chic look.

Oversized

Oversized scarves are awesome because they are extremely versatile and can be draped just about any way you like. Try wearing one with some heels and dress pants for a more elegant feel.

Rib Knit

Rib knit scarves are very in right now, especially when it comes to chunkier versions. This is the ultimate cold weather look that pairs great with sweaters, hats and of course any general outerwear

Want to add some great designer scarves to your closet but don't want to pay designer prices? Us too! That's why we've put together a fantastic selection of scarves on sale from a wide range of your favorite brands like Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Faliero Sarti and many more.

Brands

Burberry

Burberry scarves are best known for their modern plaids and European-feeling print designs. The colors on these scarves are bold yet dark, giving them a rich, classy appeal for all generations.

Gucci

While Gucci has a lot of prints, this brand is almost surprisingly talented when come to floral scarves (especially silk). They have just enough bold pops of color and background design to keep the florals always looking fresh.

Faliero Sarti

The scarves from Faliero Sarti are inspired by ancient cultures, most notably those around the Mediterranean. From rich reds and blues to burnt oranges and cool pastels, these scarves are elegant no matter the time period.

Shein

Shein scarves are a playful addition to modern fashion. Though fairly simple in design overall, these scarves come in a variety of fun prints like stars, feathers, animals and geometric shapes. These scarves allow us to unleash our wild side without having to go overboard.

N.Peal

This brand is known in the scarf world for its wide array of sleek, solid colors. N. Pearl is a great designer to turn to when you're looking for a specific hue and just a traditional knit design (they have largely pashminas and chunky cable weaves) to complement your outfit.

Sundance Catalog

Part vineyard, part Southwest explorer, part European villa-- we're feeling it all with the scarves from Sundance Catalog. We also love the tassels that come on a lot of their designs, adding to the exotic vacation ambience.

Shoptiques

Shoptiques scarves come in color arrangements all across the board, but what we're really focused on here is how flowy and fun they are. Even the heavier knit versions still have some bounce. We also like the fact that they can be wrapped and draped in a lot of different ways.

Emilio Pucci

"Trippy" is one word that comes to mind when we look at the zany scarf designs from Emilio Pucci. In other words, we love them. These scarves are truly expressive, and they're only for the most daring wearers. Wear these ones over solid colors to make their uniqueness really pop out.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen's traditional skull designs are still present on the modern scarves from this brand, and they haven't lost their appeal at all. Today's skulls are found in a wide variety of colors (including gradual fade versions) and arrangements. It honestly doesn't get much cooler than this.

Fendi

Fendi has a lot of great solid colors in high quality fabrics. From eye-popping burgundies and blues to the always palatable neutrals, the scarves from this brand certainly do not disappoint. That said, Fendi lovers looking for patterns will love their unique takes on florals.

ETRO

Scarves from ETRO are for floral and paisley lovers. Both modern and traditional, these manage to appeal to a wide variety of tastes even within that category. The color usage here also looks like they got it straight out of a kaleidoscope.

Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein scarves are always one of our go-to choices (who are we kidding, their clothing in general is a go-to). This brand somehow always manages to be trendy while utilizing simple, classic designs. We especially love their two-tone scarves because they can be worn by pretty much any age demographic and fashion style. They also just amp up any traditional solid tone jacket.

Trends

Recent runway collections have seen bold prints and all kinds of designs and colors. Even more noteworthy, however, is the fact that many designers have also been accessorizing their looks with not just one, but multiple, scarves at a time. From traditional neck wraps / ties to scarves used as belts and bandeau tops, it's all currently fashion forward. Silk scarves are particularly on trend, so be sure to grab a bunch of your favorites to make sure you and your wardrobe are ready to go!

Scarves and Celebs

It's not uncommon to see any celebrity out and about with a scarf (if you're human and you like fashion, you've probably worn more than a few scarves yourself). Actresses like Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker are particularly known to be fond with them, having been spotted numerous times with different designs and prints around their necks. Actress Chloe Sevigny and model Kendall Jenner have both been photographed with scarves cozily wrapped around their heads. If anything, modern celebrities and their scarves are proof that you don't need to limit yourself to just one style. Scarves should be all about fun and expression, after all!

What's Next for Scarves?

We don't see scarves themselves going out of style anytime soon in the near future, but we do expect the ways in which they are worn and tied will change (here's a great guide on different ways to tie a scarf). And with current designers styling their looks with multiple scarves at a time, we're thinking that everyday looks could start embracing this unique trend as well. That said, with modern fashion's recent obsession with retro looks and inspiration in general from bygone eras, we're betting that the unique prints are here to stay.

If we're looking way down the line, we're anticipating that scarves might even become part of the growing "wearable tech" trend. Who knows? A fitness tracking scarf or one with a holder for your earbuds may be well on its way!
