History of Keychains
Once upon a time, what we today call "keychains" were used as tokens of good luck. Ancient cultures attached small amulets to string, launching a trend that would go on throughout human history. It wasn't until the late 1800s, however, that people would start using small tokens as personal memorabilia instead of just for spiritual or good fortune purposes. In the 1900s, an additional keychain purpose category came to be-- fashion.
By the end of the 20th Century, girls everywhere were amassing huge collections of keycgains. From pom-poms to funky-colored rabbits' feet, it was all there. This trend died down eventually, but of course keychains still remained widespread among all types of people.
Fast forward to the 2010s, however, and something interesting started happening. In 2013, Karl Lagerfeld debuted "Karlito", a small, fuzzy, totally adorable little keychain figure modeled after himself. Karlito was a hit during the Fendi Fall-Winter runway collection that year, and keychain charms suddenly started popping up on bags and apparel from other designers.
Keychain charms remain more popular than ever. In more recent years, brands like Prada have taken things a step further with kechain charms that resemble miniature versions of their famous handbags. Will we see even tinier charms to accompany these in the future?
Modern keychain charms are more fashion-forward than the keychains of old. In addition to ones that display the designer label and other logos, there are pom-poms, hearts and other fun geometric shapes, food-shaped charms and more. Express your unique personal tastes by adding your favorite one (or two) to your handbag of choice.
Keychains were named the Must-Have Spring Accessory of 2017 by the Independent (U.K.), though that accolade might as well carry over to present day due to their continued popularity. Today's keychains are increasingly made from metal and leather, as opposed to plastic and other lower-quality materials of years past. We're also seeing a consistency in animal figures.
Keychains in Pop Culture
Keychain charms are getting so on trend that celebrities themselves are wanting to not just display them, but design their own. Kendall and Kylie Jenner have released their own handbag line, complete with its own pom-pom keychains. Victoria Beckham also announced in late 2018 that she would be releasing her own line of keychain charms, including leather versions with her logo on them.
