Starting out as a functional one-piece that was originally worn by parachuters, the jumpsuit is famously known as a garment that has both sleeves and legs, yet leaves the head, hands, and feet uncovered. Being regarded as the outfit of convenience, it's easy to remove or put on and it's easy to clean. If the jumpsuit happens to have a drop seat, it doesn't have to be removed completely when having to go to the bathroom. So regardless if one is wearing one due to its convenience of for its effortless style, here's a look at the jumpsuit and how it has remained a staple in fashion for decades.

History of the Jumpsuit

The jumpsuit began as a piece that was worn by sky divers and parachuters for their practicality (yes, for actual jumping.) It was created by a Florentine designer and artist who went by the name Thayat. The design has always remained simple, but it has always remained liberating and revolutionary. It was a pilot named Charles Lindbergh who finished the first solo transatlantic flight in the world wearing one and a gentleman named Neil Armstrong is the first person to wear one on the moon.

The thirties were a big era for jumpsuits. It was put on the fashion map in the thirties by revolutionary designer Elsa Schiaparelli (who was rivaled by Coco Chanel) when she unveiled it in the Paris couture scene with her daring and innovative designs. She even went as far as creating an easy-off, easy-on air-raid suit that came with a matching flask, velvet turban, and gas mask. In 1937, the jumpsuit went Hollywood in Stage Door, worn by none other than Katharine Hepburn. A few years later, American sportswear pioneer Vera Maxwell designed a jumpsuit that was the outfit of many working women during World War II. The outfit was also the same seen on the "You Can Do It" posters featuring Rosie the Riveter in a one-piece rocking a polka dot headband. This poster is has been known to be a symbol of empowered women and an iconic moment in culture.

In the 60s the jumpsuit came back in full force after André Courrèges showcased his futuristic jumpsuits in Paris. In the 70s YSL sent some dazzling one-pieces down the runway that were rocked by icons such as Elvis, Abba, and Cher (which they adapted into their signature style). Futuristic jumpsuits also became a hit at the iconic disco club called Studio 54, which were oftentimes worn by regulars such as Bianca Jagger, Liza Minelli, and Diana Ross.

Jumpsuits have had a long history in pop music as well. Whether it be Mel B rocking a skin-tight leopard suit in the Spice Girls, Britney Spears rocking a red PVC jumpsuit in Oops! I Did It Again, or Madonna wearing one in Papa Don't Preach, jumpsuits have held a torch for as long as many of these pop stars have remained on our radios.

The jumpsuit did have a break for a few years, but it started to be taken seriously in the fashion world by the 2000s. Jumpsuits started to end up on red carpet events as an alternative to the average dress, which then make the item a must have for every closet. Why? Well, they're the ultimate all-in-one outfit. They blend a perfect storm of sass, attitude, comfort, and ease all in one piece. Once you pick up one with a flattering design, you'll wonder what you've been doing without one in the first place.

Types of Jumpsuits

Jumpsuit

A classic jumpsuit bears all the same traits: It has opening for the feet, hands, and head. Given what's available on the market, there's a jumpsuit that's for wear to suit any occasion.

Romper

A romper is much like a jumpsuit, but it doesn't have long sleeves or pant legs. Some don't even offer sleeves, which feel great when trying to stay cool in the muggy heat. Being a perfect outfit for the summer, a romper is a perfect choice for those looking to enjoy some warm weather in some comfortable clothing.

Jumpsuit Patterns

What's great about jumpsuits is the fact they offer a wide variety of options when it comes to their print. Whether it be metallic, striped, floral, or solid, you'll have no problem finding the jumpsuit that matches your mood.

Solid

A solid colored jumpsuit is a great place to start if you're buying your first jumpsuit. Given its wide range of capabilities, you'll find out that it can suit (no pun intended) almost any outing.

Floral

A floral jumpsuit feels as great as it looks. If there's an outfit that screams summer, a floral jumpsuit is the garment for the season.

Striped

Some striped jumpsuits look straight out of the 60s, which is a fantastic nod to the longevity of this one-piece.

Print

Perfect for a dinner party, a printed jumpsuit is what you'll want to wear if you're looking to look great and feel even better.

Metallic

A metallic jumpsuit looks as great now as it did back at Studio 54. These are perfect for anyone looking to shimmer.

Jumpsuit Sleeve Length

Sometimes you want to be covered up. Sometimes you want your arms to breathe. Either way, the jumpsuits below are the perfect answers to your dilemmas.

Long Sleeve

Casual and stylish, long sleeve jumpsuits looks great regardless it the sleeves are up or down.

Short Sleeve

Possibly paying homage to Rosie The Riveter, short sleeve jumpsuits are practical (and some have pockets!)

Jumpsuit Leg Style

What's great about jumpsuits is that you can even find the leg that's right for you. Some of the more popular leg styles are:

Wide Leg

Having a jumpsuit with wide legs not only makes you feel as if you're walking on air, but having the pant legs trail behind you is a stimulating effect for anyone you're walking towards.

Crop

Allowing your ankles to breathe almost feels like you're no wearing pants at all because they're so comfortable. Cropped jumpsuits look great with most footwear, but feel the best with sandals.

Jumpsuit Details

Having some flair to your jumpsuit isn't a bad idea. Some details that add a touch of perfection to jumpsuits are:

Ruffle

Ruffles look great and most jumpsuit options with ruffles look red carpet ready. Are you ready for your close up?

Belted

A jumpsuit with a belt adds a layer of sophistication and class to an outfit. You're in control and you're confident.

Wrap

A wrap can be an excellent touch to an outfit that doesn't need to say much. With the right wrap, a jumpsuit can ooze style out of every pore.

Jumpsuit Neckline

We love it when fashion breaks the rules, because limiting jumpsuits to only long sleeves would be boring. Such excellent examples are:

Halter

Jumpsuits with halters are incredible. Whether you're the star of a Broadway production or simply attending one, the Givenchy Halter Bow Jumpsuit would be an excellent outfit to wear.

Plunge

It's cheaper to own a great plunge jumpsuit than it is to own a Manhattan high-rise apartment, but with a great plunge jumpsuit you'll look like you live in one.

Spaghetti Strap

Spaghetti straps make you feel like you're in control, but allow some breathing for warmer weather. A great outfit for a stroll on the beach.

Off-The-Shoulder

A great off-the-shoulder jumpsuit not only makes you look like you're on vacation, but makes you feel as if you've booked a one way ticket to the Cayman Islands.

Jumpsuit Colors

Jumpsuits are fun, so why not have some fun selecting a color that looks great. Some classic jumpsuit colors are:

Black

Almost anything looks great in black, with jumpsuits being no exception. Expect finding no problem when finding shoes to match.
